Electricity and water are always included in the already affordable rent – so budget-conscious students can make significant savings on other housing-related costs. Shared apartments are located in almost all of our properties, and you can live in a shared apartment for your entire period of study if you wish. Friends and siblings moving together for studies can apply for a shared apartment. All tenants of a shared apartment have to be full-time students. A separate rental agreement is made with each tenant for their own room.

What is a shared apartment?

A shared apartment consists of a private room in a shared apartment. A shared apartment usually has 2-4 rooms, with each tenant having their own lockable room. In addition, the apartment has a kitchen and a bathroom, which are shared spaces for the tenants. The kitchen includes a refrigerator, freezer, and stove. Shared apartments are rented unfurnished, but there may be furniture belonging to other tenants in the shared spaces.

Water and electricity are always included in the rent of a shared apartment. In addition, you naturally have access to all other tenant services.

In a shared apartment, you have your own, lockable room. The size of the room varies from 10 to 20 square meters. The room includes a wardrobe, and in connection with basic renovations, rooms are often also fitted with a personal refrigerator. Otherwise, the room is unfurnished.

Shared apartments are mainly allocated separately to female and male students. However, Hoas also has a small number of gender-neutral shared apartments.

Who are your roommates in a shared apartment?

Other full-time students from different schools in the Helsinki metropolitan area live in the same shared apartment. The tenants are of the same gender as you, unless you have specifically applied for a gender-neutral shared apartment. Otherwise, the residents of the shared apartment can be just as diverse as elsewhere: tenants of different ages, fields of study, and from various backgrounds and cultures.

When you receive an offer for a shared apartment, it may include a roommate presentation survey completed by the current tenants. Its purpose is to help you decide whether to accept the offer. The answers provide information, for example, about the apartments quiet hours, cleanliness, and the tenants’ wishes related to shared living. There may also be greetings and contact details so that you can get in touch before moving in. You can find the responses to the survey in your housing offer.
