Changing schools

However, if a significant break in your studies is expected, please refer to the guidelines on how interruptions in studies affect your right to occupancy.

Going on a study exchange
If you live in a Hoas apartment and are leaving for a student exchange, you have couple options:
- You can keep your apartment and continue paying rent as usual.
- Sublet the apartment for the duration of your exchange, following our guidelines. You will need to provide proof of study-related exchange, such as a certificate from your institution.
- Terminate your tenancy agreement and, if needed, apply for a new Hoas apartment when you return to the Helsinki metropolitan area to continue your studies. Remember to give at least one full calendar months’ notice before your departure.
If you live in a family apartment and only one of you is going abroad for the exchange, the tenancy agreement can continue as usual. However, you are both jointly responsible for ensuring that the rent is paid, and the apartment remains in good condition, even if you are temporarily not living there.
Military or civil service
If you live in a Hoas apartment and are completing military or civil service, you have couple options:
- You can keep your apartment and continue paying rent as usual.
- Sublet your apartment for the duration of your service, following our guidelines.
- Terminate your tenancy agreement and, if needed, apply for a new Hoas apartment when you resume your studies. Remember to give at least one full calendar months’ notice before moving out.
If you live in a family apartment and only one of you is going into military or civil service, the tenancy agreement can continue as usual. However, you are both jointly responsible for ensuring that the rent is paid, and the apartment is kept in good condition, even if one of you is temporarily not living there.
Expecting a child
If your household is expecting a child, remember to inform us as well. Notify us about the new family member using a form in MyHoas. Be sure to report even if the child will only live with you part-time.
If you need a larger apartment due to the pregnancy, you can apply for a new apartment with priority status. Additionally, review how parental leave may affect your right to occupancy.
