Aware worksite

What on earth is an Aware worksite?
Aware worksite* is a concept made by Hoas. The concept aims to ensure that all Hoas worksites share the same practical social responsibility objectives. The first worksite of the concept started in fall 2024 and this year, the concept is used in total of 10 Hoas worksites. Others have also joined us – see how you could adopt the Aware worksite for yourself.
Construction is done by and for humans. The better everyone involved is doing, the better the end result. It’s especially important that employees speak up – and that they are listened to. Read and remember the rules below. Following them benefits everybody, including you.
*Tiedostava työmaa in Finnish.
Things work, if…
You’re always safe.
Everyone is responsible for safety. Everyone should have clear instructions and the rules should be followed by all. If you notice anything unsafe, fix it and let your boss know. Avoid unnecessary risks and don’t fool around. A moment of inattention can bug you for years.
You don’t have stress or too much to do.
We are not machines and there’s a limit to how much load humans can bear. Not knowing what is expected of you causes stress just like having too much to do. Enough time should be allocated for each task. If you have too much to do or the schedule is too tight, speak up.
We treat each other with respect. No harassment.
Let’s talk to each other like one human being to another no matter who we are, where we come from or what we do. Everyone should respect others, their time and work. Let’s create a workplace we could recommend to our mothers or daughters. Together.
Everybody’s heard.
You know best what it takes for you to do your job better. That’s why we employ professionals with a brain, two ears and a mouth. Please use them. If something is wrong or you think of a better way to do it, say so.
Your boss supports you.
The management’s job is to ensure that you have everything you need to do your job. A good boss is present and knows what is actually going on – and what should be going on. That’s why bosses ask and listen, give constructive feedback and thanks.
Things are in order and not a dirty mess.
In construction, a lot of time is wasted in looking for stuff. A dirty mess wastes time, endangers safety and bugs you. When everything is in the right place at the right time, we save time, money and hassle.
You get the info you need easily and in time.
Nobody can do their job, if they don’t know what should be done, when and where. A proper briefing is the foundation of a good worksite. The situational picture should be open to everyone. Schedules should be on display for all to see. Let’s meet and talk things through daily.
What is the Aware worksite about?
As construction developers, we want to raise awareness about the well-being of workers at our sites and the quality and safety of work. Also, we want to know how the well-being of workers ensures compliance with international human rights and labour rights principles.
The workers are at the heart of the Aware worksite concept, regardless of the company they work for. Regular surveys are used to measure the performance and well-being of the workplace, and to encourage workers to share their experiences, opinions and suggestions for improvement. We want to give everyone an opportunity to make their voice heard and have an impact on the way the site operates as a whole! The results of the surveys are shared openly with everyone working on the site, the results are also available on worksite in the form of a snapshot. Any development needs and measures arising from the surveys are planned on the basis of the responses received, together with the contractors on the site.
In addition, all participating developers operate a whistleblowing notification channel at the sites through which is possible to report, for justified reasons and in good faith, serious violations or issues on the site, either anonymously or using their own name. The purpose of this channel is to receive reports on unlawful activities and misconduct.
How to adopt the Aware worksite concept?
Hoas offers the opportunity to adopt the Aware worksite concept. All parties using the concept agree on shared principles of operation to ensure the original idea and practices are maintained across different users.
Adopting the Conscious Construction Site concept means that a party may implement Hoas’s concept, operating model, site survey, and visual identity on their own construction sites under specific conditions. Users of the concept commit to preserving its core principles unchanged and agree to develop the concept only in cooperation with Hoas.
- Hoas provides guidelines to support the adoption of the concept, access to order visual materials, the content of the site survey, and instructions for creating a situational overview.
- Modifying the content of the seven rules or the site survey without Hoas’s permission is not allowed.
- The visual identity may be adapted to the needs of the adopter, as long as it remains easily recognizable and clearly linked to the original materials.
- All communication materials must indicate that the Aware worksite concept is developed by Hoas and include the concept website address: hoas.fi/tiedostavatyomaa (or hoas.fi/en/aware-worksite/)
